All About Headphones
Why are there so many different kinds of headphones? That’s a good question. I guess it’s the same reason there are so many breakfast cereals at Publix; you have to satisfy a wide range of needs and tastes. Let’s take a look at some different types headphones and see what makes them unique and different, and why you might prefer one or the other.

First, a quick overview
Headphones are nothing more than miniature speakers. But unlike regular speakers, headphones are designed and tuned to provide maximum performance when placed directly on the listener’s head or in the ear. And just like regular speakers, the design and materials can make a major difference in the way they sound. If listen with headphones primarily for talk radio or sports, sound quality may not be important. But if you listen to music, particularly for any length of time, high-performance headphones are a real asset.

Over-the-ear headphones
These are the big dogs of the headphone world and are designed to completely encircle the ear. There are two primary advantages. First, because of their size, over-the-ear headphones have enough room to utilize larger speaker elements. This means, in general, that over-the-ear headphones provide superior bass response. Second, over-the-ear headphones provide the best noise isolation. The cushioned seal around the ear keeps out ambient noise, great when listening in noisy environments. Just remember, that some of those ambient noises might be important, like a phone call, or the boss calling you to a meeting.

On-the-ear headphones
As the name suggests, these headphones do not encircle the ears, but rest on them. They’re smaller and weigh less, which makes them more comfortable to wear. The bass response isn’t as good as over-the-ear headphones and the background noise isn’t sealed out as effectively, but the added comfort is many times worth it. If you like to listen at work, over the ear headphone can be a good choice.

Ear buds
Take an over-the-ear headphone, eliminate the headband, and miniaturize the speaker elements—what you are left with are ear buds. Standard equipment with many portable music players like the iPod, ear buds are the most comfortable headphones to wear. But some people, due to the shape of their ears, have trouble using them. And believe it or not, a common complaint about ear buds is that since they are so small, they’re easy to lose. But for portable listening, there’s probably nothing better.

Noise canceling headphones
These are special headphones with active electronics that effectively cancel outside ambient noises. Great for travelers, they provide a nice, quiet environment for listening to music while in a plane, train, or any other environment where background noise is obtrusive.
